Three Tips for Office Snacks

25 March 2022

Working full time, whether working from home or working at the office, is an activity that naturally inspires the desire for snacking.

Lunch breaks and regular tea times just aren’t going to be enough when you are faced with hours upon hours or work at a time.

The problem with snacking, though, is that snacks to almost always be particularly unhealthy. Whether a packet of crisps or anything from a local shop, snacks that you buy are always pretty bad for you.

So how do you make healthy office snacks to snack at your desk?

#1: Making Healthy Snacks At Home

When it comes to eating at work, the best option, whether it is snacks or entire meals, is to prepare it from scratch at home.

This is not only going to result in much healthier snacks, but is also going to mean that you end up with tastier and cheaper food as well.

You just first need to decide how much effort you want to put into making your snacks. You could go all out in making home fried potato chips, or you could prepare small amounts of snack foods at home in the morning before work.

A great mainstay to get you started is to make carrot sticks at home. Simply peel and cut some carrots into bite sized pieces and bag them up. Eaten on their own, they are a refreshing and low calorie snack that lets you get all the joy of chewing and crunching through something, without eating too much sugar.

To make them even better, serve them with a small amount of hummus, or even a little bit of sour cream.

If you want, you could even make some corn tortillas and fry them in little strips and use them as crisp replacements.

The options are truly endless!

#2: Making Smarter Choices When You Buy Snacks

While making snacks yourself is definitely the best thing for your wallet, it is sometimes just feasible, especially for those with busy lives and long hours.

For those that simply don’t have the time or the inclination to cook stuff from home, you can still make good choices when picking snacks while at the workplace.

Instead of turning towards vending machines and quick foods, why not go for some healthier options?

Fruit is always a good option, especially things that are enjoyable while you can still work, like an apple or even a banana.

For sweeter options, though, you might consider candied fruits, or even those little fruit jellies that lots of vending machines sell. As long as you go for ones that prioritize all natural fruit juices, rather than ones that are just sugar and nothing else, you should be good.

You could also just go out and buy smaller foodstuffs from supermarkets, or even food markets, to satisfy that need to snack during the day. This could include things like bread, beef jerky, or even just small amounts of things like nuts.

Whatever you do, try and avoid excess quantities of sugar or fat, and try to stick towards carbs to fill you up, or protein to satisfy that need to consume.

#3: Simply Eat More During Regular Meals!

This advice might seem obvious, but a great alternative to snacking throughout the day is to make sure that you are eating enough during your regular meals so that you don’t need to snack!

This means not only eating enough food during your breakfast, lunch and dinner, but also ensuring that you are eating the right food.

The right food in this context means ensuring that you eat filling, nutritious foods for all of your meals. Things like cereal and fine for a regular breakfast, but if you are only eating that, what are you going to do when you start getting hungry in only a few hours’ time?

Make sure to eat plenty of protein with your meals, as well as plenty of actual nutrients in every meal.

If you just eat junk food for any of your meals, you are going to swiftly realize that you are starving no matter what you do, even after only a couple of hours.

Make Sure You Don’t Eat TOO Much Though

One thing to keep in mind when planning your snacks during work hours is that you don’t want to be getting too many calories.

This means that you need to be carefully watching what you are eating, to make sure you don’t accidentally eat too much and ruin your calorie intake.

You could also increase your daily spent calories by using a standing desk. It is only a small thing, but standing up all day could not only be more comfortable for you, but also help you burn those extra calories as well.
