5 Ways to Relax When Working From Home

13 June 2022

In the working from home boom, there’s been a real focus on people's mental health. A large part of that is the ability to now wisely spend time previously spent commuting. Whether that’s exercising in the morning, getting some housework done during your lunch hour or Friday drinks straight after work, people have been embracing work from home culture across the world.

So that got us thinking, what are some of the best ways to relax when you’re working from home?

Meditation

Meditation has always been an important thing that many of us dismiss. It’s a way of finding inner peace, relaxing or even calming yourself down. But doing meditation isn’t always easy. Where do you start? You start by finding some Headspace. Headspace is an app that’s free to download and guides you through meditations, sleep stories and anxiety reducing practices. The best part is you don’t need to spend hours trying to find zen, you can try out meditations as short as 5 minutes.

Nearly every Headspace meditation starts by asking you to find a comfortable place to sit. Where better than an ergonomic chair? The Flexi-Chair Ergonomic Office Chair is so comfortable that you’d think it was designed for meditation. But the benefits don’t end there. Breathable material and an ergonomic design will ensure that in between meditations, your back doesn’t start to ache.

Office Stretches

What are office stretches you say? Well they’re stretches you do in the office of course. There are a few stretches that are perfect for getting up and relaxing after a few hours of hard work that we can recommend.

The Shoulder Stretch

Hold your elbow with your opposite hand and pull across your chest. Hold in a position where you can feel the stretch for 3 seconds and alternate.

The Standing Side Stretch

Stand with both feet together and lift your arms above your head. Lock your fingers together, inhale and reach up. On the exhale, bend your body to the right and hold for 5 seconds. Alternate to the left.

The Standing Quad Stretch

Stand with your feet close together and lift one foot behind. Grab your foot and pull it towards your body for 5 seconds then repeat with the other foot.

In between these stretches, there’s another way you can increase blood flow, burn calories and improve your physical health. That’s a standing desk. The Classic Standing Desk E1 is the perfect standing desk for anyone looking to do some stretches. With a motorised up and down system, you can easily achieve the perfect height for stretching whilst working.

Take a Walk

Whilst you can take a walk at the office, most of our offices are in busy city centres and aren’t always so pleasant to walk around. Whereas many of our homes are near parks, fields or hey, maybe you have a garden? Either way, it’s important to get out and walk. It’s recommended that we get around 10,000 steps per day, which you probably won’t be able to fit into your lunch hour, but it’s certainly a great start. Plus, the fresh air will do wonders for your physical and mental health, that’s a fact.

Watch Funny Videos

While we generally discourage excess screen time (nobody wants strained eyes), sometimes kicking back with a hilarious tik tok account or your favourite Youtuber is the most relaxing thing we can do. It takes our minds off work and gives us a chance to laugh, chill out and kick back. If you often find things like meditation or quiet time difficult due to racing thoughts, watching a video, film or documentary can distract us from those crowded thoughts and give us a break. Of course, this may not be the best idea if you have already done 8 hours in front of a screen.

Sit in the Garden

If you are lucky enough to have a garden, patio or even a balcony, we recommend you take some time to sit in the fresh air. Sometimes, taking in some cold fresh air and feeling the breeze on your face is the best way to relax during a hard work day. You could even take your laptop outside for a bit and work in the sun if you find it pleasant. Get yourself a good deck chair or take your ergonomic chair out into the natural environment for optimal comfort. Make yourself a cold drink, build a picnic for lunch and soak up the gorgeous atmosphere. This is something most office workers do not get to do - so make the most of it when working from home.
