Your Home-Working Wellness Checklist

18 November 2021

Working from home can have its advantages and pitfalls. On the one hand, you have the freedom to sit where you like, have the TV on, and sleep in a little later in the morning. But there’s also the stress of working around kids, frequent interruptions and a lack of social engagement with colleagues.

Research is mixed on the pros and cons of remote working. Some love it, some hate it - but no matter which team you find yourself on, it’s crucial you take good care of yourself when working from home.

We have compiled a checklist for you to work from to ensure you are keeping well during your remote work-week.

Remote Working Wellness Checklist

1. Eat healthy foods - and lots of it. Make sure your fridge is packed with colourful vegetables, whole fruits and healthy yogurts. Stock up on nuts, berries, and other healthy snacks for when you’re feeling peckish. Staples like porridge oats, green tea and whole grains are also important.

2. It’s not just healthy foods that are important. Treat yourself too. Ensure you have coffee, biscuits, and any other personal favourites to keep you happy and satisfied during the day.

3. You need an alarm clock. Set it for the same time each day and allow yourself 10 extra minutes to wake up. Try to stick to a schedule, as this will help your body form a routine.

4. If you’re a problem sleeper, try a pillow spray or a drop of lavender to help you nod off. A warm milky drink before bed can also do wonders for snoozing.

5. Your bed is for sleep - not for work. Put your laptop away at least 1 hour before you go to bed.

6. Tidy up. A tidy home will help keep your head space nice and clear as you’re working. Go to bed with a tidy home so that you wake up to a refreshing and welcoming space in the morning.

7. DON’T work from your sofa! While it may initially feel like a good idea, the way your spine curves forward on a sofa can cause back problems if you stay there too long. Back problems will then interfere with your productivity and sleep. Make sure you have a proper ergonomic chair to sit on.

8. Set up a welcoming environment to work in. Make sure you have a desk that is properly adjusted to your height and body shape.

9. If you already have a desk at home, it might not be the correct shape and size to meet your needs. Therefore you can buy a desk converter which means you can still utilise your existing desk.

10. Make time for relaxation. Take an hour a day just for yourself. You might have a relaxing bubble bath, talk to a friend on the phone or watch Tiktok or a soap opera.

11. Pamper yourself. Make sure you are washed, moisturised, dressed in comfortable clothes and feeling great. Go to the pharmacy and stock up on all the items you need to feel fresh and cosy.

12. Socialise. Invite friends over once or twice a week minimum, even if it’s just for a coffee break or a quick lunch. It is important to retain a social life when working remotely to avoid depression and loneliness.

13. Make sure you have virtual socialising time too. Open a social media account to stay in touch with your friends and family during your working day.

14. Have ample children’s activities in your home so that when your children are home from school they have something to do. The last thing you need is them interrupting your zoom call.

15. Ask friends and family to babysit for you when needed. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Playdates can also be a good way to carve out some time - simply take your kids to a play centre with your friends and take your laptop with you so that you can catch up on emails at the same time.

The Bottom Line

Wellness at home is important. Feeling healthy and well will ensure you have a more productive workday. Plus, staying well reduces your sick days and helps you feel happier. Good sleep, a healthy social life and wholesome foods are just some of the ways you can achieve this.
