The summer weather brings with it much joy, especially if you’re somewhat of a sun worshipper. Trips to the beach, cocktails in the garden and rapidly melting ice creams are just some of the perks of a hot summer’s day. But there are some disadvantages to warm weather - sunburn, fatigue and sleepless nights being just some of these. Insomnia is rife during July and August - for one simple reason. It’s too hot.
Why Can’t You Sleep In Heat?
Unless you are accustomed to warm weather, a sudden heat wave can be very disturbing for the following reasons:
1. You have to sleep with your window open. In the absence of a fan, your window staying open is the only way to prevent overheating. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, this can cause noise disturbances.
2. Fans aren’t silent. Some of us are very sensitive to the slightest noise and a fan running all night can cause insomnia.
3. Our country doesn’t do air con. When you go abroad to a hot country, you are met with blissful air conditioning everywhere you go. Most homes also have air conditioning. But in the UK, this is much more rare. Therefore, you have to cool down your home in other ways, or just tolerate the heat all night, causing insomnia.
4. Your body relaxes when it cools down. A drop in temperature can induce sleepiness, which is often why a bath before bed is recommended because it induces this ‘cooling’ process. If your body cannot cool down, you are less likely to doze off.
5. Your covers aren’t on properly. Some people much prefer feeling a weight on top of them to nod off to sleep and cannot sleep without a cover. This makes falling asleep tricky when the weather is hot.
6. You’re dehydrated. All that sweating can cause a real thirst at night, meaning you wake more regularly for water.
7. The kids or baby can’t sleep. If your toddler is uncomfortable they are more likely to wake and cry, which further disturbs your sleep.
8. Your partner’s body heat isn’t helping. It’s one thing being hot, quite another having a human radiator to your side!
What can you do about it?
To aid sleep during a heat wave, there are several things you can do.
1. Get more comfortable. You want to maximise your comfort levels to try and offset the discomfort caused by the heatwave. You can do this by getting an ergonomic adjustable bed. You’ll be able to change the bed settings according to your preference. And, if you do have a partner disturbing your sleep, you can customise it with 2 mattresses so that you can adjust your sides accordingly without disturbing the other person.
2. Reconsider your bedding. Some sheets and duvets are designed for the cold. You need lighter bedding for the summer months and this way you can still have a sheet over you without getting overheated.
3. Stay hydrated to avoid waking in the night with a thirst. Avoid alcohol if possible.
4. Invest in a silent fan - a noisy fan will only keep you up for longer.
5. Wear nothing, or light pyjamas. Avoid synthetic materials that induce sweating and stick to thin thread cottons.
6. Freeze a hot waterbottle and keep it nearby.
7. Place your feet in cold water before bed to get rid of that ‘burning’ feeling on your soles
8. Use a mild natural sleep aid if necessary to help you relax
