Could a Standing Desk Change Your Life?

20 June 2022

Many people have never heard of a standing desk. When they think of a desk, they think of a wooden structure that they sit underneath, normally on an equally rigid chair. Desks have been around for centuries and, let’s face it, many of them haven’t changed much. But in modern times, ergonomic desks have been made to suit the body of the sitter (or stander, in this case). Standing desks are simply a variation of the original desk, but allow for more flexibility and movement. So, why is that important? What’s wrong with the good old original desk? We will explain..

Sitting Vs Standing

Did you know we spend as many as 46 hours a week sitting? When you think about it, that’s a crazy amount of time to be sat in one place. It’s even crazier when we think that most of us have bad postures and just as bad, non-ergonomically friendly chairs. It’s a wonder our backs haven’t given up on us yet. In response to this problem, standing desks were created. Standing desks allows you to get up on your feet to work, which has a huge number of benefits that you’ll quickly see the results of.

What’s So Good About Standing Desks?

Standing desks aren’t just for show, they’re incredible for your physical health. Standing up helps to increase your blood flow which on top of being great for you, helps improve concentration. When you’re working for up to 8 hours a day, you need every bit of concentration your brain can muster, so it’s almost like a life hack.

The improved circulation also reduces some important cardiovascular risks. Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death globally, and contributes to high levels of morbidity, unemployment and long term disability. Stroke and heart attacks are common symptoms of cardiovascular issues. So, if we can do something to prevent this - we should! And exercise / movement is exactly what’s needed.

But that’s just the first benefit, standing desks also help you to burn calories. An hour, you can roughly burn about 88 calories by standing up, which is certainly more than sitting down. With obesity being a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, it’s another reason why a standing desk is so awesome. What’s more, there’s something about sitting that makes you want to eat. Whereas whilst you’re standing at your desk, you’ll be more focused on work and less likely to snack.

One of the greatest things about standing desks is that it literally makes you more confident. Think about any important speech from history. Were they sitting down? The chances are no, they weren’t. Standing up allows you to project your confidence in a way that sitting down just can’t match. So if you’re required to give presentations, you’re interviewing or you want to get involved in team meetings more, a standing desk just might be the magic you need to achieve success.

How Do You Choose a Standing Desk?

The first thing to consider when choosing a standing desk is whether you’re going to be transitioning from standing to sitting often. If so, you certainly need a motorised standing desk, possibly even one with programmable heights. That way, you can step back, hit a button and let your desk take care of the rest.

Other than that, it’s really just a case of the size and design that suits your room. At Flexispot, we recommend the Esben height-Adjustable Desk EHD2. Not only does it have all the features we covered before, but it does a lot more than that. Ultimately, the Esben looks highly stylish and will fit in with any room, whilst giving you all of the many benefits of a standing desk.
