6 Outdoor Activities to Do With Your Children During the February Half-Term

25 February 2022

If you have young children, you know that half-term holidays generally come with a price tag (you know, other than keeping your little ones occupied for an entire week!) But as the weather gradually turns milder, the great thing is that there are plenty of outdoor activities you can enjoy with your children that won't cost much at all.

There are loads of great, free activities you can do with your children during the February half-term to enjoy the changing nature of our world. One of the best things about it all is that you don't need any equipment: just get out there and explore!

If you're a parent in need of some inspiration for keeping the kids entertained this February half-term, here are five outdoor activities to try.

1. Go on a family bike ride

A bike ride is a great way for children to get out and about, get some fresh air, and build their stamina. And, it's also a guaranteed way for adults to develop their cycling skills, too – after all, a desk bike just isn't the same!

Instead of the usual route, why not grab your bikes and hop on a train to one of the more scenic routes in the countryside? Or for less hassle with logistics, plan a local route (complete with historical commentary) that takes the family past your local landmarks.

Whether it's a leisurely ride or an exciting bike ride, you'll have a great time together.

2. Go for a walk in the countryside

If biking isn't your family's thing, why not dig out your boots and go on a rambling adventure instead? You don't need to be a mountaineer to enjoy walking in the country. Whether you decide to take a short country walk or something more challenging, your family will get some great exercise, fresh air, and experience something new.

Most towns and cities are close to brilliant spots for walking, whether it's a local park or an area of natural beauty. And with milder weather than earlier on in the year, it makes for a more pleasant walk without worrying about the cold.

3. Visit your local flower beds

Take the kids on a walk around your local park to identify the different seasonal plants in bloom.

Looking after nature is one of the many activities your children will enjoy as they grow up. Many trails provide guides that educate younger visitors about nature. You never know, your children might even find a seed that they will want to plant in their own garden when they're older.

And if you have a garden at home, how about letting them get their hands muddy while helping you plant flowers for the spring? They'll love it!

4. Go and watch the ducks

Another fun thing to do with your children during the February half-term is to watch the ducks at your local park – who, by this time of year, are thinking about pairing up. It's easy to spot the couples: they're the ones sitting next to each other in a pond.

To get closer to the action, take a bunch of friends along and hire out a small paddle boat for some on-the-water action.

5. Head to a museum

One of the best half-term activities for children is to take them to a museum.

There are loads of choices in terms of museums, galleries, and exhibitions you could take your children to – from science centres to maritime museums. They often host activity days too, so you could book a fun, interactive session with a specific theme. This is usually a great way to invite your children to learn more about the world around them.

Whether you go for a day out or just an afternoon, it'll be well worth it – and fun!

6. Book an art session

Art classes are always a good option for children, but if you want to take it out of the classroom and into the great outdoors, why not try an open-air art workshop? You can bring in materials from home or buy paint and materials locally. This is great for outdoor creativity: your children will have a lot of fun, and they won't even realise they're learning.

To keep the kids entertained once you're back home, why not have them draw a picture of their favourite location? Or make it even more interesting with different mediums, like chalk, which will allow them to doodle on the pavement. You can even use this time to organise a competition with them, asking them to come up with a design for your house.

The February half-term is a great time to try out new things with your children. There's a lot you can do on a budget, and it's always good to spend some quality time together.

If you're looking for a cheaper half-term break, take inspiration from these affordable and fun outdoor activities - and you might just enjoy yourself too!
